SWINE FLU (H1N1) 20/05/2009
UPDATE
You will be aware from the press coverage that 71 cases of swine influenza (H1N1) have been confirmed in the UK as at 13th May 2009. These cases of human to human transmission in the UK have been traced to individuals who have travelled to Mexico and other affected parts of the world. You may be pleased to know that at this stage there are no recorded cases in East London. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is closely monitoring the situation on a daily basis in order to determine the actions to take should events changes.
The World Health Organisation alert level remains at 5 which indicate that the spread is being managed. As you are aware the Department of Health has launched a national campaign based on the ‘Catch it, Bin it, and Kill it’.
Posters and leaflets about this campaign are available and have been sent to practices by PCTs. Please display these posters in a public waiting area as soon as possible. We have also been informed by the PCT that they have prepared additional guidance which you may wish to display. If this advice is not appropriate for your patient groups, (e.g. language difficulties etc), please contact the Dental Commissioning Team.
The national flu recorded information line is now operational and available on:
0800 1 513 513. It may help to display this telephone number prominently in your waiting room.
The LDC strongly advises that practices should heed the advice of the PCTs and fully engage with their emergency plans.
Any enquiries you may receive from the press relating to swine flu should be referred to the PCT Commissioning Team.
