World now at the start of 2009 influenza pandemic

On the basis of available evidence, and these expert assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met.
I have therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6.
The world is now at the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic.
We are in the earliest days of the pandemic. The virus is spreading under a close and careful watch.

You will be aware from the press coverage that 71 cases of swine influenza (H1N1) have been confirmed in the UK as at 13th May 2009. These cases of human to human transmission in the UK have been traced to individuals who have travelled to Mexico and other affected parts of the world. You may be pleased to know that at this stage there are no recorded cases in East London. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is closely monitoring the situation on a daily basis in order to determine the actions to take should events changes.
